In celebration of Lā Kūʻokoʻa, the citizens of the Kingdom of Hawaiʻi would celebrate the day just like the U.S.'s 4th of July with fireworks, concerts, parades, horse races, and galas/balls. We know this now because these events were written about in nupepa Hawaiʻi. These nupepa Hawaiʻi would also publish mele aloha ʻāina, mele that were written to celebrate our independence, our nationalism and patriotism, and general love for our ʻāina.
This year, Midkiff celebrates Lā Kūʻokoʻa with mele aloha ʻāina.
